Hello Friends and welcome back to the Is That Soh Podcast!

Today on the podcast I have invited fellow podcaster and human connection & transformational coach, Emily Gough to come on and talk to us about the power of forgiveness and how forgiving someone who hurt you is actually for you.

Like a rug ripped out from under her, Emily’s life took an unexpected turn when she found out on Christmas Eve her ex had been having an affair for the last 9 years. Forced to take matters into her own hand, Emily ended the relationship, sold her house and nearly all her belongings, and booked a solo one-way ticket to the opposite side of the globe. Today, Emily inspires others through her podcast and coaching to take ownership of the circumstances life has handed them and create a deeper sense of meaning and purpose from major life transitions.

DID YOU KNOW THE 10 MOST STRESSFUL LIFE EVENTS ARE:

  1. Death of a loved one

  2. Divorce or Separation

  3. Getting Married

  4. Starting a New Job

  5. Workplace Stressors

  6. Financial Problems

  7. Moving

  8. Chronic Illness

  9. Retirement

  10. Transitioning to Adulthood

- FORGIVING SOMEONE DOESN’T MEAN -

  • You are excusing someones actions or pardoning them from committing them!

  • You NEED to tell the person that he or she is forgiven. You can keep that decision to yourself.

  • You won’t be triggered or have any further feelings about the situation.

  • There is nothing further to work out in the relationship and that you should let go of what happened if you want to move forward.

  • You should forget the incident ever happened.

  • You have to continue to include the person in your life.

  • You need to do for the other person. Many of the benefits around forgiveness are actually for you

Meaning Fullfilled: 7 Practical Answers for Finding What Matters and Changing Your Life

In the face of something meaningful, material things don't resonate with us at all. It's the plot of every romance novel. The protagonist will stand out in the rain in front of their beloved's house. It's the story of the inspired artist or the driven scientist. They will skip sleep and miss meals to do something great. It's a damn fine Percy Sledge song.

This is what our journey is about. We are going to dig past what we're told was important and find what's meaningful. You are the artist, the genius, the conquering hero. You were born for this. We're going to claim that birthright, starting now.

Meaning fullfilled is the process of finding meaning, letting it define and fill you, and using what you've found to change the world.

- EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT STYLES -

Avoidant Attachment - an attachment style that develops during early childhood, often occurring in children who do not experience kind and sensitive responses to their needs or distress. Children with an avoidant attachment style may become very independent, both physically and emotionally and turn into adults who avoid conflict and have a hard time expressing their feelings.

Anxious Attachment - an attachment stye where a person may have a hard time feeling secure in relationships. As young children, they may cling to caregivers or become inconsolable when a caregiver leaves. As adults they become needy, argumentative, whiny, and even clingy, and often have a hard time trusting people. They may also exhibit low self worth.

Fearful-Avoidant/Disorganized Attachment - an attachment style that develops from a parent's consistent failure to respond appropriately to their child's distress, or by a parent's inconsistent response to their child's feelings of fear or distress. They may have at one moment experienced soothing, the next angry or overwhelmed causing them to become very fearful when in relationships.

Secure Attachment - an attachment style where the person feels secure sharing their feelings in a relationship and can trust their partner has the best intentions. As adults they are able to have trusting, lasting relationships, feel supported by their partner, are not afraid to seek out support and tend to have good self esteem.

- TYPES OF SEXUALITY -

If you have been asking yourself ‘what is my sexuality?’, above are a few types (there are many more) of sexual orientations people identify with. Although people do not necessarily need to identify or label themselves as one type of sexual orientation, learning about the different types can help people better understand and relate to others. It can also help anyone questioning their identity deal with any oppression or suppression they have been enduring while also helping them feel less alone. Who knows, it may even help you find a community you feel comfortable sharing experiences with and people you can connect and relate to. Lastly, a person’s sexual orientation can change over time. We are human and change is constant so have grace and compassion with yourself, life experiences will help you learn what you like, what you don’t like, and who you want to be. Sometimes, the only way out of the forest is walking through it.

- TYPES OF TRAUMA -

Emotional Trauma / Psychological Trauma - is the result of extraordinarily stressful events that shatter your sense of security, making you feel helpless in a dangerous world. Psychological trauma can leave you struggling with upsetting emotions, memories, and anxiety that won't go away.

Childhood Trauma - often described as serious adverse childhood experiences, childhood trauma could include neglect, abandonment, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and witnessing abuse of a sibling or parent.

Physical Trauma - a serious injury to the body. Two main types of physical trauma are:

  • Blunt force trauma—when an object or force strikes the body, often causing concussions, deep cuts, or broken bones.

  • Penetrating trauma—when an object pierces the skin or body, usually creating an open wound.

Generational Trauma - trauma that isn't just experienced by one person but extends from one generation to the next (ie psychological distress experienced by children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors)

Complex Trauma - Complex trauma commonly occurs with repeated trauma against a child. Sometimes a parent or caregiver has experienced their own trauma, which is still affecting them e.g. from mental illness, drugs and alcohol misuse, or being physically or emotionally unavailable. Many situations can cause complex trauma in childhood however not all complex trauma is based in a persons childhood and can be a result of experiences of violence in the community, domestic and family violence, civil unrest, war trauma or genocide, refugee and asylum seeker trauma, sexual exploitation and trafficking, extreme medical trauma and/or re-traumatisation.

Collective Trauma or Mass Trauma - a psychological reaction to a traumatic event shared by any group of people and can affect even an entire society. Covid is an example of a collective trauma.

Betrayal Trauma - trauma perpetrated by someone with whom the victim is close to and reliant upon for support and survival.

- TRAUMA SYMPTOMS -

The New York Times bestseller Johann Hari’s Lost Connections offering a radical new way of thinking about depression and anxiety.

There was a mystery haunting award-winning investigative journalist Johann Hari. He was thirty-nine years old, and almost every year he had been alive, depression and anxiety had increased in Britain and across the Western world. Why?

He had a very personal reason to ask this question. When he was a teenager, he had gone to his doctor and explained that he felt like pain was leaking out of him, and he couldn't control it or understand it. Some of the solutions his doctor offered had given him some relief-but he remained in deep pain.

So, as an adult, he went on a forty-thousand-mile journey across the world to interview the leading experts about what causes depression and anxiety, and what solves them. He learned there is scientific evidence for nine different causes of depression and anxiety and that this knowledge leads to a very different set of solutions: ones that offer real hope.

Hello Friends and welcome back to the Is That Soh Podcast!

She has helped hundreds of women and men reclaim their lives and bodies through invigorating live workouts as well as her signature “Find Your Freedom” mindfulness-based 12-week coaching program.

Today on the podcast we are going to be talking about Neuro-Linguistic Programming, psychology Martin Seligman’s 3 P’s to setback recovery, and Psychologist Carol Dweck’s 4 Q’s to effectively respond to challenging situations or emotions.

The Things you Can See Only When You Slow Down is a bestselling mindfulness guide by Haemin Sunim (which means “spontaneous wisdom”), a renowned Buddhist meditation teacher born in Korea and educated in the United States, illuminates a path to inner peace and balance amid the overwhelming demands of everyday life.

When it was first published, Intuitive Eating was revolutionary in its anti-dieting approach. The authors, both prominent health professionals in the field of nutrition and eating disorders, urge readers to embrace the goal of developing body positivity and reconnecting with one’s internal wisdom about eating―to unlearn everything they were taught about calorie-counting and other aspects of diet culture and to learn about the harm of weight stigma.

In The Four Agreements, bestselling author don Miguel Ruiz reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, The Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform our lives to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love.

In this beautiful follow-up to his international bestseller The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down, Zen Buddhist monk Haemin Sunim turns his trademark wisdom to the art of self-care, arguing that only by accepting yourself--and the flaws that make you who you are--can you have compassionate and fulfilling relationships with your partner, your family, and your friends. With more than thirty-five full-color illustrations, Love For Imperfect Things will appeal to both your eyes and your heart, and help you learn to love yourself, your life, and everyone in it.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans have been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent over three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust. He explores innovative treatments—from neurofeedback and meditation to sports, drama, and yoga—that offer new paths to recovery by activating the brain’s natural neuroplasticity. Based on Dr. van der Kolk’s own research and that of other leading specialists, The Body Keeps the Score exposes the tremendous power of our relationships both to hurt and to heal—and offers new hope for reclaiming lives.

EPISODE 1: WE HAVE LIFT OFF!

KINDLY NOTE: In Episode 1, I am taking over 30 years of my life and squeezing it into 30 minutes. Some of the themes I talk about in this podcast may be triggering to some and I just want to be clear that I am not trying to skip over, play down or shy away from talking about them or how they impacted me. It was just impossible to do in 30 Minutes. With that being said, as the podcast progresses I will be sharing more on each topic and am planning to bring on experts who can provide sound advice on these subjects. If you are triggerd and need to talk to someone immediately following this episode please visit Check Point Org to find a helpline in your country.

Further, I am also planning to give my listeners an opportunity to propose questions that they would like me to ask during my interviews as a way to guarantee that you will become part of the conversation and receive the advice/guidance you desire.

EPISODE 1: WE’VE GOT LIFT OFF!

Hello and welcome to the Is That Soh Podcast! I still can’t believe this is happening!

This podcast has been a long time coming and I am so excited to finally be launching it today.

Before I jump into sharing my intentions and motivations for this podcast I just wanted to thank a couple of people for their support. My brother in law, Mattias Friberg who composed the music for this podcast and perfected my sound, and my boyfriend Adam for always being my biggest supporter, my go-to sounding board and loving advisor.

The idea of launching this podcast first came to me back in November/December of 2019 and it has taken me 5-6 months to actually get the courage to launch it.

In all honesty, the reason why it took me so long to launch this podcast was because I was scared shitless. This podcast is much more than just a podcast for me, it is an extension of me and my life journey.

I am definitely not perfect! I have a whole lot of feelings, thought and bad habits I’m personally trying to work through but I also know from everyone who comments on my Instagram photos that I am not the only one. I think many of us could benefit from these conversations as much as I do and I hope through listening to this podcast you are able to find a source of enlightenment and healing as well.

In an effort to start off on the right foot, I really wanted to connect with you and share why this podcast is much more than a podcast for me. I knew in order to do that, I had to let you into intimate parts of my life and past which scared the shit out of me. I knew, once I shared those details and put my story out there, there was no going back…..

Unlike the interview episodes that I have also recorded in preparation for this launch (and will be premiering in the coming weeks) this episode is very personal and made me feel very vulnerable. It took over three weeks for me to write, another two for me to build up the courage to record and another month and a half to get enough guts to sit down and edit it. Each step of the way was harder than the last and as I inched my way to the finish line I battled with so much self-doubt and feelings of vulnerability it was painful.

Once I sat down and edited it though, I knew it was go-time. Not because I felt prepared and it was finally done and ready (I don’t feel prepared and would have preferred to have a lot more recordings in my ‘bank’), but because this global pandemic is and will continue to be really tough on our mental health. When we can’t create normal social connections, at least maybe through this podcast, we can build a connection through honest conversations, storytelling and the worldly wisdom/insights we discover along the way so that we can all feel less isolated and more enlightened.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy this episode and if you have any feedback/commentary or episode topic/guest interview suggestions, I would love to hear them! Leave your feedback in the comments below.
