CHICAGO TRAVEL VLOG: MY 'UNOFFICIAL' BACHELORETTE WEEKEND IN CHICAGO!

Memories from my Chicago bachelorette - Millennium Park - Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate (The Bean) sculpture

My ‘Unofficial’ Bachelorette in Chicago!

For as well travelled as I am, there are still so many places in the US that I have yet to visit. I am definitely guilty of returning to the same place several times, but I had never been to Chicago and there was something about it that I have always found alluring. Perhaps it’s its major metropolitan appeal, its beautiful architecture or its world renowned restaurants, but Chicago has always been a place I have wanted to go and, coincidentally, I am not the only one.

Rewind to this past winter, I was out at this cool French restaurant in Toronto with my two girlfriends, Emma Bain and Jocelyn Teng, and I had just asked them to be part of my wedding party. Instantly the topic of what we would do for my bachelorette came up and I could tell the girls were excited at the prospect of a trip. Of course the usual New York and Miami suggestions came up but none of it really excited me. ‘How about Chicago?’ I said. ‘I’ve never been!’ Excitement swept across the table. ‘Neither have I’, said Jocelyn, ‘Same!’, said Emma, and just like that it was decided!

I did have a special ask of the girls though. As much as I wanted to go to Chicago, bachelorette traditions like wearing a sash and being paraded around town is not my vibe. I would much rather go to nice restaurants, experience the city and do more than just drink. Of course cocktails would have their place in the itinerary but doing an Architectural boat tour of Chicago, eating at a Michelin star restaurant and checking out ‘The Bean’ were also a top priority among the group. And with that planning commenced for my ‘unofficial’ bachelorette weekend in Chicago.

If you want to see a day-by-day breakdown of our Chicago weekend itinerary, you can watch my travel vlog below. Otherwise see what rose to the top as our favourite activities below!

Things to do in Chicago

Aboard the CAC River Cruise’s Chicago's First Lady Architectural boat tour!

When it comes to standout experiences from our trip, the architectural boat tour definitely took 1st place. Truly the best way to see Chicago - 90 minutes on CAC River Cruise’s Chicago's First Lady flew by so quickly. Not only was the guide captivating with her storytelling, but the weather was incredible which made spending the afternoon on the water in the sunshine bliss. The girls and I not only learned so much about Chicago’s history and architecture, but we also relished in the opportunity to relax, take in the sites, and sip cocktails after an active morning exploring. The boat itself has an open air upper deck, a large front deck and a climate controlled interior salon with a full service cocktail and snack bar. We showed up 20 minutes prior to departure and it’s a good thing we did because the queue was already starting to build. Once passengers were let on board there was a bit of a rush to find a good seat and thankfully we secured three at the front of the boat. The cruise first moved west towards Goose Island before turning around and making its way south. Once at River City, the boat turns around again and heads back north east to the mouth of Chicago River where passengers get an opportunity to snap pictures with the entire Chicago skyline as a background before returning to the dock.

Hot tip: bring a light cover up or a hat if you are worried about getting too much sun as there aren’t really any shady areas to sit outside.

The girls and I at Millennium Park in Chicago visiting Cloud Gate (often referred to as ‘The Bean’)

The girls and I at Millennium Park in Chicago visiting Cloud Gate (often referred to as ‘The Bean’)

Talk about cultivating joy! Our Saturday morning adventure to Chicago’s Millennium Park ended up being, hands down, one of the best parts of our trip! The girls and I were enamoured by Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate (aka The Bean Chicago) and spent at least a half hour walking around it, filming ourselves inside it, taking videos and snapping photos. It was surreal to see the sculpture in person and made our leisurely morning in Millennium Park before the Art Institute opened, one to remember.

Centrally located in the heart of Chicago’s downtown, Millennium Park is a lakefront campus where you will find interactive fountains, tranquil gardens, free events, public art, skating rinks (in the winter), rock climbing, and plenty of green space. It is also home to Frank Gehry’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion & The Great Lawn where a free summer series workout class was being conducted. Since the girls and I had some time to kill we continued our walk around Millennium Park to the Crown Fountains, an interactive video sculpture fountain by conceptual artist Jaume Plensa that features two towers with LED scenes that display enormous faces of Chicago locals. In the summer, the towers cascade with water and wouldn’t you know, Emma kicked off her shoes and went right in.

Since Emma is a galleriest and Jocelyn is an amazing painter, I knew we were going to enjoy our visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art, but what I didn’t realize was just how much we were going to love the featured exhibit! The main floor featured a couple of Canadian artists including Duane Linklater and Lotus Laurie Kang, which was a pleasant surprise, and the Gary Simmons Public Enemy exhibit was unbelievably powerful and moving.

Hot tip, their gift shop is incredible and way better then the Art Institute of Chicago. So if you are looking for little gifts or souvenirs to bring home, you’ll definitely find them there! The girls and I spent a leisurely hour and a half at the museum on our last morning in Chicago and although we preferred it over the Art Institute of Chicago (which was also great), our preference had to do with the current exhibits. That being said both museums are worth going to but which one is better will depend on what exhibit is on during your visit.

Jocelyn Teng checking out Edward Hopper's Nighthawks, part of the permanent collection at the Art Institute of Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the world. It’s full of iconic works like Georges Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Edward Hopper's Nighthawks, and Grant Wood's American Gothic. The girls and I received Fast Pass admission to the Art Institute of Chicago with our Chicago CityPASS and spent a good chunk of Saturday morning wandering though its many galleries. Although lower on this list of things to do, we really did enjoy our time at the institute. Unfortunately we all had seen many pieces from the travelling Van Gogh exhibit currently on display, but there were many pieces in their permanent collection that were new to us. It is also a great way to work up an appetite for brunch.

Fun Fact: Ferris Buller’s Day Off’s iconic art museum scene was filmed at the Art Institute of Chicago!

Our visit to Chicago’s trendy Wicker Park neighbourhood was short but sweet. Our day had been full of activity already but as the sun began to set, we arrived at Wicker Park for a quick stroll down Milwaukee Ave. Wicker park’s Milwaukee Ave is full of trendy stores, music clubs, cafes, restaurants and cool fashion boutiques. The girls and I did pop into a few just to check them out quickly but given how lively our day was up to this point, we were more interested in sitting down and getting a drink. Needless to say, we found just that and more at the rooftop of The Robey Hotel located at the base of Milwaukee Ave. Here we took in skyline views of Chicago and a round of tropical cocktails during sunset. It was just the relaxing afternoon activity we desired and the perfect way to unwind before dinner. Had we had more time in Chicago I am sure we would have gone to brunch in Wicker Park and visited a few more of the vintage stores but alas, it will have to wait until next time.

Chicago Restaurants

Highlights from our dinner at Sepia - Ricotta Cavatelli with Parmesan butter, pine nuts and crispy sourdough

Highlights from our dinner at Sepia - Ricotta Cavatelli with Parmesan butter, pine nuts and crispy sourdough

Our Michelin Star restaurant experience at Sepia was well worth the splurge! Known for their inventive American cuisine, we dined at Sepia on our first night in town. We decided to each order a different dish and share so we could try almost everything on the menu. The food, the presentation, and the service were all spectacular and made for a beautiful evening.

Currently, Chicago is home to 23 Michelin Star restaurants so even if you can’t snag a table at Chicago’s famed three Michelin Starred restaurant, Alinea , there are so many outstanding dining experiences to be had. I may not be the kind of girl willing to wear a sash and be paraded around on her bachelorette, but I am the kind of girl who enjoys getting all dressed up and going out to a nice dinner to celebrate! Know what I’m saying!

Chef Thai's famoust crispy chicken wings - HaiSous Vietnemese Kitchen Chicago

Chef Thai’s famous crispy chicken wings from HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen

HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen, located in Chicago’s Pilsen neighbourhood was clearly made for foodies. The vibe is refined Vietnamese and considering they have been Nominated four times for a James Beard Award and have received 5 Michelin Bibb Gourmand, for the price it’s a steal. Service was impeccable but more importantly, the food was show-stopping. The girls and I accidentally ordered way to much but I am happy to say Chef Thai’s famous crispy chicken wings made it back to our hotel room and I will vouch, they made for a great snack the next morning!

Chicago Brunch Spots

Bachelorette in Chicago - best restaurants in chicago - duck duck goat chicago for brunch

Duck Duck Goat in Fulton Market - a delicious dim sum brunch!

Our last meal of the trip was a delicious dim sum brunch at Fulton Market’s Duck Duck Goat! We started off with a round of cocktails before diving in to house made soup dumplings, spring rolls, their famous duck fried rice omelettes and a bowl of their delicious, hand-pulled, spicy noodles! The food was so delicious, inventive and energizing, and was one of our favourite meals of the trip! Duck Duck Goat is Chef Stephanie Izard’s third venture with Boka Restaurant Group and after our brunch experience at Duck Duck Goat I’m intrigued to try out their other restaurants ‘Girl & the Goat’, ‘Little Goat’, and ‘Cabra’ too!

Bachelorette in Chicago - Brunch restaurants in chicago - obelix chicago

The Pain Plissa;adoere from Obélix Chicago

After our morning at the Art institute of Chicago, the girls and I headed to Obélix in Chicago’s River North neighbourhood for an upscale French brunch. From escargot, to the foie gras Monte Cristo (their take on French toast), Obélix does a decadent brunch right. Although we did enjoy our meal at Obélix when it came to ranking our dining experience, this brunch came last. Perhaps we are spoiled with good French restaurants in Toronto or perhaps it was just that they had really steep competition. Either way it was good, just nothing to write home about.

The cafe inside Venteux, a french brasserie in downtown Chicago.

Our first morning in Chicago the girls and I stumbled upon Venteux while walking to Millennium Park. In desperate need of a good morning coffee, we crossed the street to check it out. A gorgeous French brasserie, cafe and oyster bar, the restaurant features a front cafe with outdoor patio seating and large dining room in the back. Since hunger had yet to strike, we grabbed a couple of ice coffees and a few pastries before continuing on our walk to Millennium Park. But there is no doubting this spot’s appeal and given their coffee was good I was left definitely wanting more.

Chicago Cocktail Bars

Chicago Bachelorette - best cocktail bars chicago - the aviery chicago

One of the cocktail presentations from our night at Aviary in Chicago

After our Michelin Star dinner at Sepia, we headed out for a nightcap to Alinea Group’s Aviary. We didn’t have a reservation and were a little worried about just showing up, but it seemed like luck was on our side because we managed to snag a table fairly quickly. The bar’s decor felt a little dated (it was giving airport lounge vibes) and the crowd was definitely more mature (not surprising considering cocktails start around $20), but we really enjoyed our evening of elaborate presentations and deliciously creative cocktails. It was a great way to end the night after such a fantastic dinner and a unique experience we all really enjoyed.

Determined to make the best of our last night in Chicago, the girls and I made our way to Three Dots and a Dash, A Polynesian tiki bar in Chicago’s bustling River North neighbourhood. The place was packed which made it challenging to get a drink but once we did, we had no problem getting in the dancing mood. The one thing I would do different is call ahead. Bar seating is very limited and there isn’t many great places to put your drink down. Had we had a reservation we could’ve sat down and ordered drinks from a waitress and gotten up to dance while still having a place to set our drinks down instead of standing the whole time.

All in all the girls and I had a great time on my ‘unofficial’ bachelorette trip to Chicago. There are so many fun things to see and do in Chicago, it’s hard to fit them all into one weekend. If you have any questions or comments about our trip to Chicago, feel free to leave them in the comments below. I’ll also be posting more wedding content soon so don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube and Instagram pages! Until next time!

MISSION TOFINO: RESTAURANTS IN TOFINO, THINGS TO DO & MORE

With love from Tofino - A fun afternoon at Cox Bay Beach

Want to hear a crazy story?

The day my friends and I travelled from Victoria to Tofino, British Columbia, the highway flooded! At the time, Vancouver Island and the lower mainland were experiencing an ‘Atmospheric River’ which was causing it to rain like crazy (AND I mean non-stop for the previous 4 days). Although rain is not uncommon for BC in November, the amount of rainfall Vancouver Island and the lower mainland received due to the Atmospheric River was record breaking, causing river levels to increase dramatically and localized flooding to occur.

Driving Route from Victoria to Tofino British Columbia

How people typically drive from Victoria to Tofino BC

Unfortunately for us, this all came to light while sitting in standstill traffic on the highway just 25 minutes outside of Victoria. We had planned to get up early, have breakfast and leave Victoria at 11AM which gave us an estimated arrival time of 3:30-4PM. However, just before 11AM the Malahat flooded and we were stuck. We sat there for 5 hours barley moving. Eventually, we learned they had to shut down the highway and had to make a pivotal choice, roll the dice and attempt another route or turn back defeated.

alternative route from Victoria to Tofino British Columbia

How we ended up having to drive from Victoria to Tofino BC

Normally, the drive from Victoria to Tofino BC will be around 4.5-5 hours long and take you up the east side of the island through Duncan, Nanaimo, and Port Albernie. But since the Malahat (the 25 km stretch of highway in the Cowichan Valley between Victoria and Duncan) was closed due to flooding we had to take the long way around. In total, we were in the car for over 13 hours. It was madness! The alternative route we ‘rolled the dice’ on took us up the west side of the island before cutting back across to Duncan, and continuing up through Nanaimo and Port Albernie to Tofino British Columbia. This route added an additional 2.5 hours to our journey and since we didn’t start moving again until 4PM, the sun had set and we had to do the whole drive in the dark! I’m talking dark, foreign, winding, one lane roads in the rain!

By the time we finally arrived to our hotel in Tofino, my friend and I had felt like we had gone through battle together. We were exhausted, relieved and elated, and the rest of our trip definitely had an underlying sense of gratitude to it. Our trip to Tofino ended up being totally worth the additional hecticness and over the next few days we took full advantage of our time there, getting up early to do some hikes, exploring beaches, checking out restaurants and discovering everything the area had to offer.

If you are planning a trip to Tofino, British Columbia make sure to check out my list of recommendations below so you too can make the most of your time in this easy going and playful Vancouver Island town.

Accomodations In Tofino - Tofino Resort and Marina.jpg

Tofino Resort and Marina offers guest safe harbor to enjoy Tofino’s purifying coastal air, abundant wild life and never ending adventure opportunities.

TOFINO RESORT AND MARINA

Our refuge after the grueling drive and stomping ground during our three night stay was none other than Tofino Resort and Marina. I first heard about this newly opened resort (opened in the summer of 2017) over a year ago. Rumor has it that the place used to be pretty run down and their restaurant was actually the dive bar in town. But looking at it now you wouldn’t know it as the 63 room hotel and marina has been completely renovated and the resort outfitted with a new designated Adventure Centre, a state-of-the-art gym, full service marina, and two new restaurants - 1909 Kitchen and The Hatch Waterfront Pub.

If you are looking to explore Tofino beyond the beaches, Tofino Resort and Marina’s Adventure Centre has you covered with an incredible selection of activities and courses like guided fishing, whale watching, wildlife tours, paddle boarding tours, and Maquinna Marine Provincial Park Tofino Hot Springs Cove tours*!

*During COVID the Tofino Hot Springs (Hot Spring Cove) closed but will be reinstated so check back for future updates!
- Good news! The Tofino Hot Springs (Hot Spring Cove) is now open to the public again! (updated Oct 5 2022)

Since opening, 1909 Kitchen and The Hatch Waterfront Pub have become local favourites. While exploring the many shops in town, several people we spoke with recommended we eat there and commented on how great their brunch was, and how beautiful their waterfront patio and dining room is with views of the mountains. I particularly loved their fresh seafood offerings, use of local seasonal forged ingredients, and well rounded menu selection. Highlights from our meal included the Outlandish Raw Oysters, Kale Salad and Wagyu Flank!

Three additional things I loved about this place were 1) it was clean, 2) my bed was so comfy and, 3) you could walk to town in 5 minutes, which meant you were close to so many of the best restaurants in Tofino including cafe’s, boutiques and more! We were also right on the water so if you wanted to come by boat (I would love to sail up the west coast one day) or gather your best mates for the ultimate pacific salmon fishing trip, it’s the perfect spot to refuel and recharge.

TOFINO RESTAURANTS

Dinner at Shelter Restaurant in Tofino BC

Located just down the street from Tofino Resort and Marina, Shelter Restaurant uses an array of fresh and local ingredients to create dishes that embody the essence of Tofino. My friends and I grabbed dinner at Shelter on our first night and were blown away by how delicious the food was at this Tofino restaurant. Highlights of our meal included the Crispy Brussel Sprouts (unlike any other I have ever tasted), the Farmhouse Chicken Burger, and Steak Frites with Chimichurri.

Hot Tip: This Tofino restaurant does get packed so make sure to call ahead and make a reservation or go early and put your name down before walking around town so you don’t have to sit outside and wait.

Restaurants In Tofino - Tocofino

The little food truck that started it all! Tacofino’s first location at the back of Live to Surf Parking Lot In Tofino BC

The little food truck that started it all, Tacofino’s first location at the back of the Live To Surf Parking Lot still continues to draw a crowd and is definitely a must when in Tofino. Serving delicious tacos (vegan and vegetarian options available), burritos and gringas, this legendary orange food truck has been a favourite for locals and visitors since 2009. The Tuna Ta Taco and Fish Taco are menu favourites as well as the Krispy Chicken Taco, but you really can’t go wrong when ordering anything on their menu.

Dinner at 1909 Kitchen in Tofino British Columbia

Even if you don’t stay at Tofino Resort and Marina, a visit to 1909 Kitchen should still be on your itinerary. Not only are the views amazing, but their cocktail and food menus are too. If you’re in Tofino in the summer they also have a great waterfront patio with views of the mountains. Many people we met also recommended this Tofino restaurant for brunch, but the dinner we enjoyed there was definitely one of the best meals we had.

Restaurants In Tofino - Quest Artisan Patisserie

We found a tiny French patisserie called Ouest Artisan Patisserie while exploring Tofino BC

We stumbled upon Ouest Artisan Patisserie one morning while exploring town and had to stop and check it out. Located in a tiny shipping container at the end of Campbell Street (220 Campbell Street) this traditional French patisserie offers freshly made croissants, breads, sandwiches, and pastries daily as well as beautiful custom wedding cakes, macarons and artisan chocolates. My friend ordered one of their croissant breakfast sandwiches to enjoy while we walked around checking out the other container vendors/stores and the amount of noise he made to show his enjoyment while eating was enough to get my own stomach growling.

Restaurants In Tofino - Rhino Cofffee

Erica and I grabbed two Americano’s from Rhino Coffee House every morning while in Tofino, British Columbia

Every morning in Tofino we would stop in at Rhino Coffee House to grab coffee and treats. Known for their fresh daily donuts and roasting their own beans, Rhino Coffee House quickly became our go to morning spot while in Tofino. Their Americanos were just the caffeine fix I needed to get the day started and I wasn’t alone. This place was always busy and you could tell that many locals like to gather outside chatting over coffee with their neighbours while walking the dog. It was cute and totally encapsulated the ‘Tofino lifestyle’.

TOFINO BEACHES & THINGS TO DO IN TOFINO

If you are looking for fun things to do in Tofino there is definitely no shortage. Known for it’s incredible surfing, visiting one of Tofino’s gorgeous beaches is definitely part of the draw. Even if you have no intention of surfing, spending the afternoon walking along the beach and watching the surfers or sunbathing is must. There are also some great local, family friendly hikes and adventures to do in the area, a few of which I did myself and am happy to recommend below!

Things To Do In Tofino - Visit Long Beach

Captured a surfer heading out for a rip at sunset on Long Beach in Tofino British Columbia

Probably the most famous beach in all of Tofino is Long Beach, where you will see lots of local surfers doing their thing. This 16km stretch of beach represents the longest beach on Vancouver Island and has a vibrant, storied, surf history. Known for being a great place to watch a dramatic winter storm or spot a gray and humpback whale during their migration, Long Beach has been attracting visitors to Tofino for decades. While in Tofino BC, the gang and I took the drive to Long Beach hoping to watch an amazing sunset and we were not disappointed. We ended up arriving 45 minutes prior to sunset and spending a lot of time walking around taking photos. The lighting was so beautiful at this time of day that I ended up taking some amazing shots of wildlife and surf. If there is one beach you can’t miss, it’s this one.

Friendly Reminder: Since Long Beach is located in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve remember that droning is not allowed and parking is strictly monitored so don’t forget to pay the fee!

Another great and popular beach to visit is Cox Bay Beach. Surrounded on one side by cliffs, a lot of people who visit Cox Bay Beach will also do the unmarked hike to Cox Bay Lookout, a 2.6 kilometer trail that under normal conditions would be considered moderate. Unfortunately for us, the recent rains had made the trail quite muddy and since the trail is not maintained, I highly recommend you wear hiking boots. The reward of course is a beautiful view of Cox Bay Beach and of the open ocean but take care getting up and down as it can get very slippery, especially going down.

Things To Do In Tofino BC - Tonquin Beach

Erica at Tonquin Beach, the first of three beachs we came across while on the Tonquin Trail.

On our first morning in Tofino, British Columbia, my friend Erica took me to do the Tonquin Trail. This short, 2 mile trail seemed to be a popular trail for locals with dogs (almost everyone we saw had one). Perhaps that’s because it’s so conveniently located close to town or maybe because the trail itself is super easy and quite beautiful. Erica and I were able to do the entire loop in about an hour and a half (we stopped a lot to take photos) and found the trail takes you along the Pacific coastline through rainforests and along rugged cliffs and boardwalks that led to get vantages points. Additionally it also connects three beaches together Tonquin Beach, Third Beach and Middle Beach, so it’s an easy way to see all three with one short walk/easy hike.

South Beach, one of the two beaches you can explore while on the Nuu-Chah-Nulth and South Beach Trail

A great family friendly trail that Erica took me on was the Nuu-Chah-Nulth and South Beach Trail. Apparently as a child Erica did this trail with her dad and to this day still has very fond memories of her experience. The 6.4 km trail is very easy with elevated boardwalks that take you through old growth forests with lush vegetation to two well know beaches, South Beach and Wikaninnish Beach. Known for its large rock formations, South Beach is a pebbled beach with rolling foamy waves. If you’re visiting during storm watching season, be careful of powerful waves and ocean spray!

My favourite beach of all the Tofino beaches was definite Mackenzie Beach. This beach is a little more sheltered than the rest thanks to its large tidal rocks. As a result, the water is calmer than the others with gentle waves suitable for skim boarding, stand up paddle boarding or small children. It also happens to be one of the only beaches we visited that was not in the National Park so I was finally able to take out my drone and ended up capturing some great footage. Beach access is available to everyone, even if you are not staying at one of the properties that line the beach. Everyone is welcome, just parking might be hard.

Unfortunately, when I was in Tofino the Tofino Hot Springs were closed and I was unable to do the tour offered through Tofino Resort and Marina’s Adventure Centre. However, the Adventure Center did mention that they are planning to reinstate the Tofino Hot Springs tour once the Ahousaht First Nation and the Hesquiaht First Nation grant access to Hot Spring Cove again (access was restricted due to concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19 to the Hesquiaht First Nation village in Hot Springs Cove). This was definitely something I was looking forward to doing while in Tofino BC but alas, I understand the reasons why. Regardless, I recommend checking back for updates on whether it’s been reopened because it’s something I totally plan on doing the next time I’m in Tofino, British Columbia.

TOFINO MAP

Check out this Tofino map which shows where all the above recommendations are in relation to the Tofino Resort and Marina!

GETTING FROM VICTORIA TO TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Victoria to Tofino - Driving

The easiest way to get around the island is definitely to drive and under normal conditions the 317.3 km drive from Victoria to Tofino British Columbia should take you under 5 hours to complete if you don’t stop.

Alternatively, there is a ferry that you can take part way from Victoria to Swarts Bay terminal, but it doesn’t save you time or get you far enough to make a substantial dent so it’s not really a good option.

If you don’t have a car you can also take the Tofino Bus offered by the Tofino Bus Company that services both north bound and south bound daily. Fare for adults start at $102.83 whereas youths between 12-17 are $72 and Children 2-11 are $52. The bus does pick up from various points around Victoria including the Victoria main bus depot (departure is at 9:45AM) so check their website to see what the closest pick up point to you is. There are also four main drop off locations in Tofino so be sure to pick the one closest to where you are staying.

GETTING FROM VANCOUVER TO TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Getting from Vancouver to Tofino isn’t hard, it just takes some preparation. There are flights offered by Pacific Coastal Airlines and Harbour Air Sea Planes that can take you right from Vancouver to Tofino in 45 minutes. Additionally you can do a ‘drive and fly’ combo by flying from Vancouver to Victoria, Nanaimo or Comox and drive the rest of the way.

If you don’t feel like flying, BC Ferries also offers numerous ferries from Vancouver to Vancouver Island. Your three options for taking the ferry include:

  1. Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay: Horseshoe Bay terminal is located just north of Vancouver and arrives to Nanaimo’s Departure Bay in just under 2 hours.

  2. Tsawwassen to Duke Point:  Located just south of Vancouver close to the USA border, the Tsawwassen terminal ferry takes you to Duke Point terminal, about 15 minutes south of Nanaimo, in approximately 2.5 hours.

  3. Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay:  Leaving from the same mainland terminal as above, the Swartz Bay terminal ferry takes approximately 2 hours and drops you off 30 minutes north of Victoria.

For more information visit https://www.bcferries.com

Further, if you don’t have a car and don’t want to fly from Vancouver to Tofino, you can also take the ferry to Vancouver Island and then jump on the Tofino Bus. I would just do the extra research to make sure you line up the timing correctly so you don’t get stuck mid transit.

Well there you have it! Another great trip in the books for me and another slew of recommendations for you! If you are heading to Tofino soon I hope you have a great trip and feel free to come back and share your recommendations with me too! I’m always looking for an excuse to go back! Until then, safe travels!

A big thank you to Tofino Resort and Marina for hosting us and partnering with me on this post. As always, all opinions remain my own!

WHAT'S NEW IN VEGAS: AN UPDATED VEGAS 2.0 TRAVEL GUIDE

Strolling through the Venetian Resort Las Vegas

I could hardly contain my childish excitement as we glided through the air taking in the view of the Las Vegas Strip. Although it had only been two years since I attended my friends bachelorette in Vegas, there were so many activities I still needed to cross off my bucket list and so many recently opened restaurants I was itching to try. It was good to be back and now, soaring over the Vegas Strip in a helicopter, soaking up its buzzing energy from an unbelievable vantage point, I was hit with a title wave of elation that literally made me laugh aloud. Viva Las Vegas, baby!

This time around I wasn’t attending a bachelorette. Instead, I was with a great group of friends who enjoyed eating and trying new things. Some of us had been to Vegas before while others were experiencing it for the first time. Although much of what you expect from a Vegas vacation remains available, the city is also rolling out the red carpet with many new experiences for visitors to try. Tons of restaurants have recently opened and there’s even a new hotel on the strip! I was on a mission! So for five and a half days we dined, drank and explored. I crossed so many items off my Vegas bucket list and have so many new recommendations to share because it’s Vegas 2.0 and it’s better than ever!

The recently opened Casa Playa at The Wynn Las Vegas!

WHAT’S NEW IN VEGAS

My meal at The Wynn Las Vegas’ newest Mexican costal restaurant, Casa Playa, was sensational. Chef Sarah Thompson’s ceviche, aguachile, and seafood platters are all sustainably sourced from Mexico’s Pacific coastline. The selection of carne is also hard to pass on with Wagyu tacos and suckling pig carnitas being major highlights, both served alongside fresh house-made corn tortillas. Trying one of their cocktails is also a must as Wynn’s expert mixologist Mariena Mercer Boarini has curated a collection of delicious cocktails using only the best spirits and produce of Mexico. As soon as I walked into the place I knew it was something to get excited about. The ambiance was beautiful, the staff were so friendly, and the drinks and seafood dishes that followed were exceptional. I already have plans to come back on my next trip to Las Vegas.

restaurants aria las vegas - Julian Serrano Tapas-4.jpg

Marissa from Darling Escapes looking excited for dinner at Julian Serrano Tapas

Join the party and feast on Julian Serrano’s revamped menu of exquisite Spanish fare at Julian Serrano Tapas located in Aria. Two-time recipient of the James Beard Award and Madrid native, Chef Julian Serrano shares his interpretations of his native Spanish fare with delectable small plates with big flavours like ‘Pulpo a la Gallega’, an octopus dish with potatoes and Spanish paprika, and Shisihito Peppers dressed with lemon and sea salt. If you’re a big paella fan like me, I recommend persuading a friend or two to tag team one of their delicious paellas as well. And don’t forget to save room for dessert! We did a trio of their orange blossom ‘Crema Catalana’, homemade Churros in a spicy hot chocolate, and Monchego cheese cake, that we devoured. Top it all off with their refreshing house made Sangria that takes 3 days to create, and you have a great meal to get you started on a night out in Las Vegas.

A slice of Canada has found its way to Las Vegas with one of the world’s most celebrated Greek seafood restaurants opening its 7th location in The Venetian Resort Las Vegas. Born in Montreal, Estiatorio Milos serves an à la carte menu of dishes family style, in a setting inspired by Greek Cycladic landscapes and the iconic Milos fresh fish market. Open for lunch and dinner, Milos is perfect for large groups, date nights, celebrations, and up scale family dinners. While in Vegas I had a chance to try their prix fixe lunch menu for $38 which is a great option if you are going out as a large group and want to keep it simple. Menu favourites included the Big Eye ‘Tuna Tartare’ with micro basil, Serrano chile and orange, and ‘Astako Makaronada’ a Deep Sea Bay of Fundy lobster pasta, Athenian style.

If you are a fan of celebrity chef David Chang, Majordomo Meat & Fish opened at The Palazzo right before the pandemic which, in my opinion, means it’s practically brand new! The restaurant features a large main dining room, a nice bar area with additional seating, and a secret karaoke room which is available to groups after dinner for singing and cocktails. My friends and I had dinner here and ordered a la carte to share family style. Big hits include the ‘Bing Bread’, ‘Shaved Fois Gras’ with pear butter and ricotta, ‘Crispy Cauliflower Shawarma’ with tahini, cherry tomatoes and pomegranate, and Shrimp Crispy Rice with spicy salt, gochujang and cilantro. For an entertaining table side experience order the ‘The Major Doughnut’ for dessert! It’s essentially pan fried Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in a banana flambé with vanilla ice cream and caramel whip. It’s delicious and the best dessert I had in Vegas!

Resort World Las Vegas - the first integrated resort to be built on the Las Vegas Strip in over a decade

The first integrated resort to be built on the Las Vegas strip in over a decade has finally open its doors to the public! Resort World Las Vegas is an urban contemporary resort that blends technology, luxury with the long standing traditions and level of hospitality associated with the Resort World brand. Situated on the north end of the Las Vegas Strip, adjacent to the Fashion Show Mall and Las Vegas Convention Center, Resort World Las Vegas is comprised of three hotel properties - Las Vegas Hilton, Conrad Las Vegas and Crockfords Las Vegas. The hotel casino floor boast 117,000 square feet of both slots and table games like blackjack, craps, and roulette, but the real ‘wow factor’ can be found on the 66th floor at their more intimate Sky Casino. Resort World also has the largest pool complex on the strip with seven stunning pools to choose from, an Awana Spa that offers a variety of treatments inspired by European and Eastern rituals to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul, as well as over 70,000 square feet of curated designer boutiques to help you indulge in some retail therapy. Additionally, expect to see artists like Katy Perry, Celine Dion, and Luke Bryan performing at Resorts World Theatre, a multi level concert and entertainment venue with a 5,000 person capacity that is outfitted to host a myriad of affairs from A-List concerts to conventions. Lastly, there are over 40 globally inspired food and beverage experiences to explore at Resorts World Las Vegas, more than any other destination on the Strip.

Enjoyed my lychee cocktail ‘Fuhy Haiku’ from Fuhu Las Vegas outside at Ayu Dayclub

I had a chance to experience Resort World Las Vegas a few times during my latest trip to Las Vegas and was even invited to try a few bites from one of their signature restaurants FUHU, a contemporary Asian inspired restaurant who’s menu features a wide variety of dished including seafood, steak and sushi, plus specialty cocktails and sake. Everything I tasted was delicious including their signature lychee cocktail ‘Fuhu Haiku’, duck fried rice and ‘Fuhu Fried Chicken’ with chile glaze and scallions. Next time I am back in Las Vegas I will for sure be organizing a proper sit down dinner here so I can try the rest of the menu.

DJ Snake at Zouk Nightclub, Resort World Las Vegas

One of the first events I attended while in Las Vegas was to see DJ Snake perform at Resort World Las Vegas’s club, Zouk Nightclub. Attached to Ayu Dayclub - a Bali inspired outdoor oasis - Zouk Nightclub is a massive venue spanning over 26,000 square feet with the capacity to hold over 2,100 people. The club features a large dance floor surrounded by go-go dancers and booth seating. The main stage, although elevated didn’t feel impersonal which I think allowed the crowd to really connect with the DJ and music. Upscale nightclub attire is required to enter so come dressed to impress!

Helicopter Tour Las Vegas - Maverick Helicopter Soheila_.jpg

If you don’t get a photo, did it really happen? Me at Maverick Helicopter in Las Vegas ready to take flight!

FUN GROUP & FAMILY ACTIVITIES IN LAS VEGAS

One of the biggest highlights of my trip was definitely doing an afternoon helicopter tour of the Vegas Strip with Maverick Helicopters. I have been in a helicopter before but for some reason it still fills me with childish excitement ever single time I take flight in one, and this was no different. The ride was a total of 15 minutes long and took us soaring above the strip giving way to incredible views of Vegas. It was such a fun experience and I got a thrill out of seeing iconic landmarks like Paris Paris’s Eiffel Tower, Bellagio, Wynn and the Venetian from way up high.

HOT TIP: Sit on the pilot’s side of the helicopter for the best views! The tour starts at $149 USD and shuttle service to the Las Vegas Strip Terminal, where you would be meet your pilot, is available.

Dinner at the Wynn is always a good idea and their restaurant Lakeside is about as amazing of a setting as it gets in Las Vegas. Situated on the edge of the Lake of Dreams, you aren’t just getting an upscale dining experience, you’re also getting a beautiful show full of characters and music! The girls and I lucked out with a great table on the patio that provided us a prime location to view the show all while feasting on one delicious dish after the next. Highlights of this meal definitely include everything from the ‘Raw & Chilled’ section of their menu as well as the Atlantic Diver Scallops in a cauliflower velouté, fennel chutney, grapefruit, and roasted chicken jus. For dessert, ‘Pretty In Pink’ and ‘Shooting Star’ both rose to the top as table favourites for presentation and taste. Although a great restaurant for large groups, entertaining clients or splurging on an upscale family dining experiences, children under 5 are not allowed in the restaurant and there is a dress code. So come dressed to the nines and ready for an unforgettable night!

Our Lakeside Las Vegas view!

An absolute must when in Las Vegas is going to a Cirque Du Soleil show. During this trip I saw 2 Cirque shows, Mystère at Treasure Island and ‘O’ at Bellagio Hotel & Casino, and both were spectacular! Mystère is an original Cirque Du Soleil production that combines high-energy acrobatics to the thunderous rhythms of the Taiko drums, and ‘O” is a theatrical performance that combines world-class acrobats, synchronized swimmers, and divers with enchanting characters. Both shows are around 90 minutes and tickets are available Wednesday through Sunday for 7:00PM and 9:30PM showings. Tickets vary in price depending on which show you choose and where you want to, sit but they start at $75-80 USD. Although I do consider this a group or family friendly activity, I would be doing you a disservice if I did not also mention that guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and children under the age of 5 are not permitted in the theatre.

So there you have it, another trip to Vegas in the books and a lifetime of memories to go home with. If you haven’t already I also recommend you check out the guide I did after I organized my friends Bachelorette in Vegas. It’s also full of great Las Vegas restaurant recommendations and fun activities to do including the best Vegas pool party I have ever been to. If you end up doing any of the activities I shared above or dine at any of the restaurants I recommended, I would love to hear about your experience and invite you to share about it below! Until next time!

FALL ESCAPES: A ROAD TRIP TO STRATFORD, ONT

Marissa and I enjoying coffee and dessert on the Patio at Cafe Buffon in Stratford, Ontario PC: @lilalavereau.ca

Green, amber and red maple leaves danced in the wind like pompoms, welcoming us as we made our way to Stratford. Autumn had just begun in Ontario and, although a bit grey, the fall foliage had already begun to reveal itself, lining the highway with vibrant colours that made you remember why road trips in the fall can be so wonderful.

It had been over a decade since I had been to Stratford, Ontario and although I had no plans this time around to see a play at their world renowned Stratford Festival, I was excited to experience the city with fresh eyes. Not only had a lot changed about the city, but a lot had changed about me in the last 10 years. New interests and appreciations for things like good food, art and culture, heritage homes and boutique business you can’t find anywhere else, occupied my agenda and I was ready and eager to make the most of my time in Stratford.

ACCOMMODATIONS IN STRATFORD, ONTARIO

During our time in Stratford we stayed at a lovely boutique accommodation located on the quiet, historical, York Street just steps from the Avon River. Known for being a great part of town to enjoy a morning stroll or afternoon picnic, The River Merchant Inn & Spa features two spacious 2 bedroom suites decorated in musical memorabilia that celebrate Stratford’s rich musical history. The building itself was once home to the Heintzman Pipe & Piano Company before transitioning into a music store and school where famed local musicians including Justin Bieber and Richard Manuel of The Band would frequent.

The Heintzman Music Suite we stayed in featured soaring 10-foot loft style ceilings, a full kitchen, a large dining area, and a living space that offered an additional sofa bed. An abundance of natural light filled the suite and for those arriving by car with plans to stay awhile, free WiFi and parking are also included! I quickly came to realize that the River Merchant Inn & Spa is the perfect place to stay for small groups of visitors coming to Stratford that wish to be right in the heart of downtown, conveniently located and within walking distance to almost everything.

THINGS TO DO IN STRATFORD, ONTARIO

Once settled, my friend Marissa and I gathered ourselves for a full day of exploring and headed out to one of Ontario’s longest operating public art galleries, Gallery Stratford.

Gallery Stratford

Located a short 10 minute drive from downtown Stratford, Gallery Stratford was founded in 1967 and occupies a beautiful heritage Victorian building surrounded by gardens and greenery. The gallery itself is one of the region’s leading art galleries and features mostly contemporary exhibits from local, national, and international visual artists. With exhibits changing every three months and free admission (donations welcomed in lieu of admission fees) there is always something new and interesting to see at Gallery Stratford. Conveniently open 7 days a week with onsite free parking, Gallery Stratford is a ‘must see’ for visiting art lovers.

During our visit, Marissa and I were really taken aback by the diverse art work on display at the gallery, especially Jay Soule's ‘Honest Injun’ exhibition which shared unsettling facts about our shared Indigenous and Canadian history. Although some of the artwork felt provocative and even triggering, it showed the gallery’s commitment to amplifying truth, and support for reconciliation and justice for Canada’s First Nations community. It made our visit more memorable and engaging than we ever could have imagined.

Before dropping off our car to spend the rest of the day taking in the city by foot, my friend Marissa was kind enough to entertain my desire to drive around and admire the many Victorian homes scattered around downtown Stratford. Having recently bought a Victorian home in Toronto, I have become a big fan of heritage homes in recently years and knew prior to visiting that Stratford would be a great place to admire some beautiful and well conserved properties. And let me tell you, I was not disappointed! If you are interested in historical homes as much as I am, some of the best streets to take in Stratford’s beautiful Victorian properties include Church Street, Douglas Street, John Street and Norman Street. Only later did I realize that many of these streets are conveniently located within walking distance from our accommodations and centered around Stratford's Shakespearean Gardens, one of five prizewinning gardens located along the Avon River that I also recommend taking a stroll through during your visit.

Speaking of Stratford heritage, Marissa and I also made sure to check out the ‘Steps to Stardom: Justin Bieber’ exhibit on display at the Stratford Perth Museum, located a 10 minute drive out of town. Although small, the not-for-profit museum does shed light on Stratford’s rich cultural heritage and history, as well as highlights Justin humble beginnings busking on the streets of Stratford all the way to stardom. It was eye opening to learn more about where he started and gave me a new level of appreciation for his monstrous career, work ethic, and determination at such a young age, not to mention his philanthropic pursuits along the way. I love Justin Bieber’s music and found the exhibit to humanize him as a boy from Stratford who loved performing which was incredibly heartwarming. I obviously couldn’t leave without getting a picture of me with a life size JB cutout! In addition to the Justin Bieber exhibit, the museum also features a couple other exhibits which change regularly. Admission is $7 and parking is free!

Finally got a photo with Justin Bieber at the Stratford Perth Museum! My life is complete!

BARS & RESTAURANTS IN STRATFORD, ONTARIO

Lunch and cocktails at Cafe Bouffon in Stratford, Ontario

Feeling famished, Marissa and I dropped off our car and headed straight to Café B0uffon, a classic neighbourhood French Café a stones throw from our accommodations that offers a casual day time menu, full dinner service, and weekend brunch. The interior of this restaurant is stunning with large banquet seating, ornate mirrors, beautiful large bouquets scattered everywhere, and classic damask wallpaper. Outside they have a small patio with round tables, French bistro chairs and views of the small parquet next-door. The food is equally as delicious as the restaurant’s interior and I highly recommend getting their Marseille Mussels steamed in warm broth of Pernod, fennel, candied garlic, leek and chervil! It was light, filling and great for warming you up on a fall day. Additionally, Café Bouffon also makes great cocktails and coffees too so no matter your desired pleasure, stopping by to grab a drink and snap a pic is definitely a good idea.

If you aren’t in the mood for French cuisine, another great restaurant to check out while in Stratford is Mercer Kitchen & Beer Hall. Located downstairs from the Mercer Hotel, their renown Izakaya inspired menu offers delicious large plates for everyone’s unique palette and taste. In addition to having a great selection of casual fare, the restaurant also features Stratford's largest craft beer menu. Marissa and I grabbed dinner here later that evening and both agreed that the Korean BBQ glazed crispy chicken rice bowl with sesame, broccoli, pickled ginger, kimchee, aioli and herbs, was the best dish we ate in Stratford. This dish paired with one of their craft beers was *chef’s kiss*! Mercer Kitchen & Beer Hall also has a great front patio that was quite packed by the time we left so if you are interested in sitting outside, go early.

My Korean BBQ glazed crispy chicken from Mercer’s Kitchen & Beer Hall

Hot on the scene, Pretty Good Pizza is a casual restaurant in downtown Stratford, about a 5 minute walk from our accommodation, that offers delicious 16-inch hand tossed pies. Available both by the slice and whole, Pretty Good Pizza would be my ideal place to go if I wanted to grab a quick bite or was looking for some delicious takeout. Located on Wellington Street, a hop, skip and a jump from Stratford’s Avon Theatre, you can easily run there between shows for a quick bite. Marissa and I did enjoy a couple pies from here before leaving Stratford and loved their Cheezer pizza with red sauce, dry mozzarella, fior di latte, basil, and Parmesan!

After lunch at Cafe Bouffon Marissa told me about Stratford’s Chocolate Trail. Little did I know that Stratford is actually home to some of the world most famous confectioners and bakers. To celebrate this amazing honour, the city offers a self-guided tour that introduces visitors to local chocolatiers and invites them to sample decadent treats at each. Available year round, vouchers and trail maps can be purchased from the Destination Stratford office on 47 Downie Street; Bradshaws on 129 Ontario Street; Small-Mart on 119 Ontario Street; and Werk Shop on 111 Ontario Street. Six vouchers will cost you $33.90 (including HST) and can be used at participating businesses located on the accompanying map. Each voucher entitles you to a unique and chocolatey treat at each stop, and by the time Marissa and I finished doing the trail, we were high on delicious chocolatey goodness with lots to spare. I ended up bringing the remaining chocolates home to my fiancé who was very happy to receive such delectable gifts from Stratford and had no problem helping me polish them off.

Similarly to the Chocolate Trail, Stratford also has a vibrant history of being pork and ale producers! Thanks to the Bacon & Ale Trail, visitors can indulge in local microbreweries and craft beer forward businesses in a similar fashion to the self guided Chocolate Trail. Available year round, 5 vouchers for The Bacon & Ale Trail costs $33.90 (including HST) and can be purchased from the same locations listed above for The Chocolate Trail.

Grabbed a flight of craft beers from Black Swan Brewing Company while in Stratford, Ontario

After a few hours of sampling local chocolatiers and wandering in and out of shops, Marissa and I decided to hit up a local microbrewery (and one of the stops on the Bacon & Ale Trail) in downtown Stratford called Black Swan Brewing Company. Located close to the Avon Theatre, Black Swan Brewing Company offers flavour forward, high quality craft beers that can be enjoyed inside in their front of house tasting room or outside on their dog friendly front patio. Marissa and I enjoyed a flight of their craft beers on the patio which was packed with people. Clearly it isn’t just a popular spot for visitors but a favourite among locals as well.

Later that evening, after our dinner at Mercer’s Kitchen & Beer Hall, Marissa and I walked down the street to The Relic Lobby Bar to grab a nightcap before heading back to our accommodations for the night. This friendly neighbourhood cocktail bar showcases its Cuban influences through both its cocktail menu and interior design, and features a large patio out front with a few additional tables inside. Open until midnight Tuesday through Thursday and 1am on Friday and Saturday, the cocktails were delectable. We even made a friend at the bar and got the inside scoop on local hot spots as well as where the best vintage store is (learn more about this below)!

In the morning and in desperate need for coffee, Marissa took me to her favourite cafe in Stratford, Edison’s Cafe. Located just downstairs and on the other side of the building from our accommodation, Edison’s Café is a whole food cafe that features light brunch bites, gluten free treats and delicious coffee. As you probably guessed, the cafe is named Edison after inventor Thomas Edison who used to live in Stratford in 1863, and although small, does have a relaxing ambiance and cool atmosphere.

A recommendation from the new local friend we made at The Relic Lobby Bar, Bru Garden is apparently a fun food truck experience that combines the outdoors with cocktails, comfort food and picnic tables - think beer garden, but for cocktails! On our second day in town, Marissa and I did walk over to Bru Garden’s to check it out but unfortunately it was closed for the season. The place did look like it would be fun and intimate though so I thought I’d mention it as it does come highly recommended by a local and is 100% on my to-do list for the next time I do a road trip to Stratford. Fingers crossed for next summer! Apparently their smash burgers are incredible!

SHOPPING IN STRATFORD, ONTARIO

Stratford has so many great boutiques you wont find anywhere else!

Before leaving Stratford, Marissa and I made sure to visit La Osa, the vintage store that came highly recommended by our new local friend. Located on Ontario Street between The Relic Lobby Bar and Edison Cafe, La Osa did not disappoint! I found this amazing vintage trench coat while browsing the racks which I instantly fell in love with as soon as I put it on and stepped in front of the mirror! It had amazing shoulder pads, was so on trend and just what I had been looking for. Of course, I couldn’t leave Stratford without it and have since received numerous queries from friends as to where I got it. Needless to say, if you’re in Stratford you have to hit up this vintage goldmine!

Another boutique that I fell in love with while exploring was a new home good store called Dale & Company. Located at 17 Market Place, the owner shared her story with us and walked us through her curated collection of home goods. Many of the items she showed us were selected from a number of local and international artisans, and made from natural materials. There were so many little things in this store that I wanted for my new house but alas, I must wait until after my renovations before purchasing more home goods! However, I do recommend you go and see what’s new when you visit as I’m sure you’ll have a hard time leaving Stratford empty handed!

Find a curated collection of home goods and Dale & Company

So there you have it, my list of recommendations for your next trip to Stratford! Marissa and I very much enjoyed our quick road trip this fall and can’t wait to return again soon. You can bet next time we will probably opt in to stay an additional night so we can explore more of the surrounding area and all that it has to offer! Until then, safe travels!

A big thank you to Visit Stratford for hosting us and sponsoring this post. As always, all opinions remain my own!
